The roles of System Dynamics in environmental problem solving
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper contains a critical description of the roles that System Dynamics (SD) can play for the definition of mediated solutions to complex environmental problems. SD can be either a valuable tool for the definition of shared and consensual solution or a burden and a hindrance. We present a critical review of some basic concepts of SD and discuss some key concepts and their roles in the search for solutions to environmental problems. Then we examine the various roles SD can play and discuss the various arenas where SD can be used and the range of roles it can play. The paper highlights the use of SD as both a cognitive tool and a meta tool: SD can both serve as a guide of the planning process and help the unveiling of hidden assumptions and purposes and the diffusion of a shared knowledge for the solution of collective environmental problems.

Solving Environmental/Economic Power Dispatch Problem by a Trust Region Based Augmented Lagrangian Method
This paper proposes a Trust-Region Based Augmented Method (TRALM) to solve a combined Environmental and Economic Power Dispatch (EEPD) problem. The EEPD problem is a multi-objective problem with competing and non-commensurable objectives. The TRALM produces a set of non-dominated Pareto optimal solutions for the problem. Fuzzy set theory is employed to extract a compromise non-dominated sol...
متن کاملA social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences
With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...
متن کاملSolving Multiple Fuels Dynamic Environmental/Economic Dispatch Problem and Incentive Based Demand Response Considering Spinning Reserve Requirements
In this paper a new integrated model of the dynamic environmental/economic dispatch (DEED) problem and emergency demand response program (EDRP) has been presented by which their interactions are investigated. DEED schedules the online generators power output over the whole dispatch period subject to some practical constraints so that the fuel costs and emission are optimized simultaneously. EDR...
متن کاملThe Effects of Electricity Boiler on Integrated CCHP-Thermal-Heat Only Unit Commitment Problem Based on Hybrid GA Approach
Combined cooling, heat, and power (CCHP) units can be integrated with conventional separate cooling, heat, and power production units to meet demands. The goal of this study is to develop and examine a hybrid GA-heuristic optimization algorithm for solving the unit commitment problem for integrated CCHP-thermal-heat only system with considerations for electricity boiler. When environmental emis...
متن کاملAPPLICATION OF THE SINGULAR BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM FOR INVESTIGATION OF PISTON DYNAMICS UNDER POLYTROPIC EXPANSION PROCESS
In this paper a mathematical simulation of a simplified internal combustion engine is presented. To contribute engine kinematics and its geometry, simple relations are derived for constrained motions. The equation of motion for the piston forms a singular boundary value problem. The uniqueness of the solution was studied in the Banach space. For solving governing equations an iterative numerica...
